We're here to answer all your burning e-bike questions! If we don't address your question here, please send us a message or give us a call and we'll be in touch! ABOUT THE E-BIKE HOW HEAVY ARE E-BIKES?
Because they are equipped with motors, e-bikes are heavier than standard bicycles and vary by type and design. Generally, e-bikes range from 40-70 lbs, with our standard models averaging 50-55 lbs. Lighter models are easier to maneuver and transport, but heavier bikes go faster and further, so there are benefits to both! How fast can e-bikes travel?
The top speed varies depending on the class of the bike. Class 1 and 2 can travel up to 20 mph, Class 3 can travel 28 mph. We offer all 3! How can I charge AN e-bike? How long will the battery last?
To charge the bike, simply remove the battery pack and place it in the charger that came with your bike. Plug it in to a standard outlet and wait for it to charge up! It typically takes 5 hours to get to a full charge. The battery life depends on the model as well as the way you ride, averaging 20-50 miles on a single full charge. If you are using more assistance (rather than pedaling) then you will drain the battery more quickly. It takes around 5 hours to fully charge an e-bike. There are a few things you can do to increase the range of your e-bike, including:
Are e-bikes noisy?
Nope! Their pedal assist motors are incredibly quiet, similar to riding a standard bicycle. Are e-bikes waterproof? Can I ride in the rain?
E-bikes are not waterproof and should not be submerged in water, but are water resistant and able to be used in the rain and other inclement weather conditions.. To preserve the condition of your bike and make it last longer, we recommend wiping it down after use in the rain and storing it in a dry environment. What is the best e-bike for me?
It depends on how you plan to use your e-bike! A solid recommendation for new cyclists or commuters is a hybrid bicycle, but we also offer bikes better suited for families, travelers, shopping/transporting, and off-roading.
WILL MY BIKE COME WITH A WARRANTY?
Most frames come with a lifetime warranty, and a minimum one-year warranty on individual parts. The specifics of each warranty are dependent on the manufacturer. WILL MY BIKE COME WITH A USER MANUAL?
Almost all manufacturers provide a user manual online. Please ask us if there is one available for your particular model. ABOUT THE BENEFITS Do you still burn calories on an e-bike?
Yes! A study found that 444 calories were burned with the e-bike and 552 calories on the regular bike. Evidence also suggests that cyclists ride longer and farther when using an e-bike rather than a standard bike, so, e-bikers generally use less effort per mile but ride more miles and burn more energy overall. You can also reduce or even switch off the pedal assist if you are looking for a more intense workout. Are e-bikes still good for the environment?
Yes! E-bikes don’t release carbon emissions and unhealthy gases and their batteries can be recycled. Every trip you take on an e-bike that replaces a car trip makes a positive impact on our planet. Learn more about the benefits here. Do I have to be a cyclist or athlete to ride an e-bike?
No! One of the benefits of e-bikes is that they are great for everyone! The adjustable assist feature makes it easy to ride with friends of different skill and fitness levels since the rider is in control of how much assistance is provided. E-BIKE LAWS Do I need to have a driver's license to ride an e-bike?
No driver's license, vehicle insurance, or vehicle registration is required. All electric bikes and bicycles in Maui county must be registered for a one-time $15 fee. Learn more about Hawaii’s e-bike laws. Is there an age REQUIREMENT?
In Hawaii, persons 15 years and older may operate an e-bike. If you have a passenger on your bike under the age of 16, they must be wearing a helmet. Where AM I ALLOWED TO ride an e-bike?
All our e-bikes are considered an ‘electrically assisted pedal cycle’ (EAPC) and are permitted on bike paths and roadways. Riders are expected to follow the same laws as cyclists.

I liked it when you shared that an e-bike is good for the environment as it does not release carbon emissions and the batteries can be recycled. My sister just mentioned the other day that she is thinking of buying a bicycle since she wants to start doing physical activity that can help burn her calories. I will suggest to her getting an e-bike from a reliable supplier as it is good for the environment.

I like how the battery pack can be removed to charge it. My worry was that I had to leave the bike attached to an outlet with a cord. I know I'd forget about it and take off without thinking and rip the cord out of the outlet by accident.

Aloha John, Without knowing your bike brand model it is difficult to advice. Batteries have a key that is required to take the battery out. There is also normally a handle that you can use to pull the battery after unlocking the battery from bike. It is best to call the bike shop who sold the bike, or manufacture. You can easily go to manufacture site and look for the e-bike manual and it should have a picture and instructions. If you are one of RideSmart Maui customers please feel free to call us and we can guided you. We did look you up on our database but could not find any records to figure out what bike you may have purchased. Mahalo and best of luck.

Yes, you do not need to leave the battery in the case that is attached to the bike. You can take the battery out and use on any standard outlet to charge.

I am now starting my 2nd ebike use. I had a Hilltopper kit for about 8 years + Now I have a wonderful Addmotor bike. Now I can go to Big Beach from here (Kahului). When I go into those dips down @ Makena the bike might be hard to see for the know it all car drivers in their 4 wheelers. Where can I get like a pennant in orange or yellow that can be see from a distance? I always ride in bright colors, but many car drivers can't believe that an old fat man is going fast and often almost hit me or make a right hand turn in front of me in a stupid manner? Where can I get such a warning pennant?
